Birthday Weekend

I knew that it would require something extra special for me to post on our blog for the first time, and this past weekend was certainly extra special. My apologies for the lateness of the update, but better late than never. As I have some free time tonight (Friday) and I'd feel worse about my social life than if I studied (as I should be doing) than posting here. Dull? Perhaps. But you love me anyway.

So birthdays, especially for the last few years, have never really been too huge of a deal to me. I made that point particularly clear to Kristen, but for her, birthdays are huge! Plus, what good happens at 24? I'm halfway to being middle aged, I guess, and I made it all in one piece (which is a miracle, so Dad would tell me). Kristen is an absolutely amazing wife, so I shouldn't be surprised that she would take care of me like she did.

Anyway, Friday last week was pretty low key. We went to one of our favorite barbeque places (Chuck's) and took it easy the rest of the night. My birthday was on Sunday, but because Mom was coming on Sunday, Kristen decided that Saturday would be the day to celebrate. Saturday morning is when the awesomeness started. I woke up to the sound of Kristen making breakfast. Not just any normal breakfast, but chocolate chip waffles! They were so good. Sometime after the waffles settled, we went out for a run and ended up going about 4 miles, which is awesome for us. After a brief stint studying, it was time for dinner (that's supper-dinner, not lunch-dinner depending on how south of the Mason-Dixon line you are).

I honestly am not very good at predicting my surprises, so I had no idea where I was being taken for dinner. But when we pulled into Mandarin House Chinese restaraunt, I was more excited than I am on Christmas mornings. I hadn't had good Chinese food in probably half a year, and it's been since freshman year that I ate at this particular place. It's a buffet style Chinese place, but the best I've ever been to. I had two full plates full of every kind of nom noms... and then I discovered the dessert table (with soft-serve ice cream, of course). Chinese donuts are fantastic, by the way. I needed a wheelchair to get out of there. We watched Saving Private Ryan that night (one of my very favorites) and went to sleep very happy.

I didn't mention that Kristen made cupcakes on Saturday for my birthday as well. We couldn't fit anything else in our stomachs Saturday night, so we saved them for Sunday. So Sunday after church (keeping the 2 year olds during the service), Mom was waiting for us at home, and... she brought a birthday cake. (So now we've got 24 cupcakes and a birthday cake to eat, if you're counting.) So Mom took us to Outback to eat, and she accidentally (but fortunately!) let the waitress know that it was my birthday, and the waitress says "you'll get a free ice cream sunday for dessert!" Mwahaha! The lunch was so good (12oz. sirloin special cooked medium, baked potato, salad), and then our waitress brought out the three big scoops of vanilla ice cream covered in hot fudge (and thankfully three spoons).

We hung out with Mom at our place for awhile and then she went home and we took the rest of the night pretty easy, capping it off with Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Mom also took us to Kroger and bought us several groceries, which was a HUGE blessing - love you Mom! We weren't too hungry for dinner, so we skipped it and had cupcakes instead. =)

I guess you can say I'm a huge fan of birthdays now. I don't know about other men out there, but I know the way to my heart is through my stomach. Was it responsible? Of course not, but birthdays only come around once a year, and I got a grilled chicken sandwich the next night at Chick-fil-a, so that pretty much makes up for it all, right?

If you're wondering, Kristen did not eat anywhere close to as badly as I did (but I had a better time), and I took several of those cupcakes to school for my lab mates.

Forgive my verbosity - have another picture.

You and Kyle are so funny. You both had Chinese from Mandarin House for your birthdays. You are obviously brothers. :) Looking forward to seeing you this weekend.
