One week into rotations. It's definitely been a transition week for me (and for Luke since he's transitioning to me working more than full time). It's been busy but good!
Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, I worked in the pharmacy school. Auburn employees make appointments for weight management, smoking cessation, asthma treatment education, etc. So far this week, I just watched the pharmacists interview the patients and make recommendations. Next week I have to do the interviews and the pharmacists observe me...we'll see how it goes!
On Wednesday and Thursday, I worked at the Columbus Veteran's clinic (yes Columbus is in Georgia and therefore in the eastern time zone.....waking up at 5AM has been part of the adjustment). Day 1 there, I watched one example of what I was supposed to be doing then 2 patients were handed off to me to interview. The patients that I saw have diabetes and cholesterol problems. After asking lots of questions and looking at lab tests to see what was going on, I discussed my recommended drug therapy changes with my preceptor and we adjusted drugs accordingly. At the VA clinics, pharmacists can prescribe drugs (which is different from other settings), so that makes these interactions pretty cool.
Overall, this week's been a good start. Luke's got up at 5AM with me on the days that I drove to Columbus, and we've been going to bed around 9:30PM (yes, which definitely makes us old and boring). He's been great enough to help with dinner since I've had a lot of work to do at night. The first part of the week was pretty overwhelming and stressful, but it improved as the week progressed. I really am excited about the opportunities ahead. It has been encouraging this week to see how much I have learned in the past 3 years, yet overwhelming to think that in less than 1 year I'll be on my own to make decisions.
Week one....Check. Four more to go before I'm on to Montgomery for a hospital rotation.
