Moving Tips

Just a tip for those of you who might be moving in the near future... U-Haul reservations are not true reservations. Allow me to explain:
  • Let's say (hypothetically, of course) that you book a U-Haul one month in advance in order to assist you in your big across the state move. You are told then that you can pick the U-Haul up the day of the move when the store opens at 7am. Cool.
  • Flash forward to the day before you're moving (and of course, you're frantically packing boxes): you get a call from the U-Haul store (at 1:30pm) saying that there's not one truck in the city of Auburn that you might be able to use until 5pm on moving day (could be there earlier, but no guarantees). You've got friends and family lined up first thing in the morning.
  • What about Birmingham or Montgomery (where your help is coming from)? Surely, there are some U-Haul trucks in one of these two large cities - nope... none there either. It's a busy weekend and graduation has the trucks at a lower stock than normal.
  • Lesson learned: U-Haul "reservations" are more like... suggestions... that might allow you to obtain the U-Haul that day.
  • So... what might happen in this hypothetical situation? Your husband could spend a hypothetical two hours on the phone with several different U-Haul managers getting something worked out. You could end up driving to Phenix City (1 hour away) to pick up a U-Haul at 9am central time to drive back to Auburn (of course, this truck is smaller...but they're providing a trailer too). Ditch any breakfast plans at your favorite little restaurant and instead spend an additional 2 hours on the road (plus gas) picking up the U-Haul that you reserved way in advance. Thus, end up with extra stress to an already stressful and hectic move.
Of course, this is all hypothetical. Did I mention we're moving tomorrow? Last night in Auburn - what a doozy!

Update from Luke: Called back this morning and U-Haul graciously worked out getting the truck and trailer to Auburn for us. A complaint well handled.
